Dear Ollie

ear infection before thanksgiving

Your eyes have been red since Friday. We took you for a two hour walk in the cold wind and when we came back, your eyes were bloodshot. Thought it was obviously from the wind and it would let up. It didn’t. Yesterday, Monday, it still hadn’t subsided and Dad told me to not wash your head / do agua en la cabeza. I did. You woke up today very, very unwell.

I made the appointment with the pediatrician for 3 pm, but I took you to urgent care across the street at 8 am. You hated it. You were not having any of it. The nurse touching you, talking to you, looking at you. She was being so impatient with you and told me to “just hold [your] arms and head.” They tried to COVID swab you - I said no - and the air in that room changed. What is the point of getting a very uncomfortable test for a COVID diagnosis when the recommendations are to rest and drink lots of fluids? No thanks.

The doctor saw you, gave you a diagnosis (ear infection), bullshitted about your red eyes (looks like pink eye, looks viral, could be bacterial), and then prescribed antibiotics for your ears and antibiotic drops for your eyes just to cover all bases.

Antibiotics are a last resort for me. Since today was the first day you felt unwell, I decided to again let it play out. The ear infection sounded scary so I looked up some natural remedies for it. Dad got you mullein ear drops but I never even got to give them to you because you fell asleep in my arms at 4:30 pm (before he got home) and I put you in the crib for what I thought would be your third nap. You have not woken up. It’s 9 pm.

You rested well today. You took an hour nap at 9:30 am, woke, ate a banana pop, watched baby animals in the wild on Netflix, and took another nap from 11:30 am to 1 pm. I hope you’re so much better when you wake tonight. I hope your fever subsides. I love you.

P.S. JJ threw up last night so WP went over to take care of them and now she’s throwing up. Noro officially hit them.

P.P.S. I did zero Thanksgiving dinner prep and am not in the mood at all to do it. But I have a 16 pound turkey in the fridge and every ingredient in the world waiting for me to cook tomorrow and Thursday.
